The Importance of Volunteers

It was wonderful having one of our friends, Meg come and visit us at our school. Volunteers who offer their time and skills are a huge part of our vision. We have been welcoming many volunteers from the surrounding community since the start of the school. Some lead Bible studies with the children, others do seminars for the teachers, all contribute to the work of Christ among our team and the children. This past week is the first time we welcomed a volunteer from outside the surrounding community.

In preparation for her coming, we told her all the potential things that she can be involved in. To our surprise she wanted to do all of them! You can imagine we had a busy few days. One day visiting the village, another two doing activities with the school children, and two more doing professional development seminars with our teachers. During a discussion on behavior management, Peter, the Headmaster of the school, commented on the value of the training stating that he will even use the principles learned with his own children.

The children were equally excited, especially with the new sports that she introduced. Accustomed to football (soccer), the children gathered around in amazement as we introduced badminton, volleyball, and some new fun activities. After showing them how to play badminton, the older children immediately collected the rackets and were surprised to see that it's not as easy as it seems to hit the birdie. They were excited to know that everything brought would be left with the school so that they can continue practicing even when she’s gone.

The time with the children brought back many memories for my wife, as she remembered her childhood years in the SIM run orphanage and the joy she received any time volunteer visitors came. “I am glad that I’m able to give the same joy to these children that I remember feeling back when I was a child”. We hope to welcome more international volunteers as time moves on.

I’m so thankful to God that we got to welcome this volunteer, and to generous people across Canada who make opportunities like these possible. If you wish to learn more about our work, or feel called to donate, please visit: www.houseofpeaceministries.com
